The Museum of Flight is the largest independent, non-profit air and space museum in the world! The Archives Intern will be a dedicated and enthusiastic archives team member who will assist with archival processing and cataloging duties. Specific duties may include: physically processing and rehousing collections; inventorying materials; performing basic preservation tasks; writing finding aids or other catalog records; digitizing material; and creating metadata. The intern may work with photographic materials, textual materials, oversize items, and/or audiovisual recordings, including oral histories, in The Museum of Flight Archives. The intern may assist with promoting the archives by creating social media posts or writing articles. The intern will report to the Supervisory Archivist but may also work closely with other staff members including our Archivists, Digital Asset Coordinator, Digitization Specialist, and Oral History Program Coordinator.


The Oral History Project Intern will assist the Oral History Program Coordinator and Digital Asset Coordinator in making our oral history recordings accessible. The intern will be responsible for creating descriptive item-level metadata records for each of the oral history recordings; reviewing and standardizing transcripts; writing abstracts and biographical sketches; updating the Oral History Collection finding aid; assisting with promotion of the project, such as by creating social media posts or writing articles; and doing other related archival processing tasks as assigned. The intern will gain experience writing an archival finding aid following DACS standards, creating Dublin Core descriptive metadata, and reviewing and editing transcripts.

Collection Description:

The Mary Kay and Michael Hallman Oral History Program was formally established to document the unique stories of the dynamic individuals involved in the history of aviation and manned spaceflight, from pilots to engineers to executives. The primary aim of the program is to capture and preserve these stories, in their own words through video and audio recordings and full interview transcription. These historical documents, preserved and maintained for current and future generations, are then used to complement the Museum’s dynamic exhibits and are made available directly to researchers via the Museum’s Research Center.

  • Surveys the state of the assigned collection and works with the Supervisory Archivist to create an effective plan for processing and cataloguing the collection
  • Organizes the materials in the collection following the established processing plan
  • Rehouses and labels materials according to accepted archival standards and best practices
  • Creates a usable and searchable finding aid for the collection following DACS and Museum standards, using ArchivesSpace
  • Selects items for digitization, scans, and creates metadata records for digital objects
  • Reviews transcripts of audiovisual recordings created by vendor against recordings and applies standardized style formatting
  • Assists with promoting the project and the archives such as through social media or writing articles


  • Currently enrolled in or recent graduate of a graduate degree program in Information Studies, Library Science, or Museum Studies or related field with an emphasis on archival practice.
  • 0-2 years of experience in an archives, library or museum collections environment desirable.
  • Ability to demonstrate proper archival handling and processing techniques
  • Strong understanding of archival best practices
  • Familiarity with cataloging and inventorying archival collections and professionally accepted standards (especially DACS and Dublin Core metadata)
  • Detail-oriented
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
  • Experience with ArchivesSpace preferred
  • Experience with Adobe products (Photoshop, Bridge)
  • Ability to work in a team-based environment as well as independently with self-initiative and minimal supervision

This part-time hourly position’s primary workweek is Monday through Friday, within the hours of 8am to 5pm. The intern will work in an office environment most of the time, with some work performed in the archival stacks or alternate areas of the archives facility.
